John Briscoe built Srah Castle in 1588 as a four-storey tower house with walls thick enough to absorb cannon fire and musket holes aimed at approaching enemies. Its bartizans projected from opposite corners like stone hands reaching out to grip the landscape, while a spiral staircase climbed through the northwest corner to chambers where firelight once danced on punch-dressed stone. The castle stood on flat, well-drained soil in Ballydrohid, giving sentries clear views across County Offaly until ruin and time stripped away its wooden floors and much of its entrance. What remains is still a place shaped for warning, defence and quiet human life beneath a wide Irish sky.
