Slab-lined burial in Gorteen (costello By.)

Slab-lined burial

What is recorded here

A narrow chamber, built of upright slabs and roofed with more, waited beneath the sand on the hill's summit when farm work broke through in the early 1930s. It measured little more than a man's length, yet its maker had taken the trouble to line both sides and cover the top, as if marking a body worth keeping separate from the drifting earth. No bones or objects remained visible, and the exact spot was never recorded, but the shape still suggests a deliberate act of remembrance on a bare ridge.
An E−W aligned grave (L c. 1.8m; Wth c. 0.75m) was uncovered on the summit of a high sand hill/esker during farm works in Gorteen townland in the early 1930’s. The site was visited by the Ballyhaunis Historical and Archaeological Society and an account was published in the Irish Press on 19th June 1933 (SMR file): The sides of the grave were formed of stone slabs laid on edge. It also was roofed with stone slabs, but these had been removed and were strewn about; the grave was partly filled with sand and clay, and no bones or artefacts were noted. A summary description was published by Raftery (1940-41, 302). The precise location of the grave was not recorded. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 29 June 2022
