What is recorded here
Skibo Castle still casts a shadow on the Highland stone, though no date or owner is written for the marble disc. The sun moves the shadow across the castle yard, marking hours that no human hand has measured since the last keeper left. The castle keeps its own time, waiting for someone to read the angle of light and answer the question the stone asks every afternoon.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Skibo Castle, Sundial as Sundial (period Unassigned). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Skibo Castle, Sundial is associated with Skibo Castle, a 19th-century estate built by Sir William Burrell, a Glasgow shipping magnate and art collector, in the late 1800s. The sundial is remembered as part of the historic landscape of a castle later gifted to the nation by Burrell's wife in 1944.
The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
