What is recorded here

No stone or ditch marks Tulla Castle now, yet the absence is not emptiness. The land may still hold the shape of rooms, yards and defences beneath grass, soil and forgotten use. What is missing from the surface has not stopped the castle from existing; it has moved out of sight.
No surface trace visible of Tulla Castle depicted on the 1838 ed. OS 6-inch map (O' Flanagan 1933, vol. 2, 21). Castle site appears to be depicted at the wrong location on the revised ed. OS 6-inch and 25-inch maps. The castle site was located a short distance to the W of where it is marked on the 1838 ed. OS 6-inch map. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Compiled and revised by: Caimin O'Brien Date of revised upload: 28 June 2016

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
