What is recorded here

Redhill castle stood on the ridge edge with thatched houses inside a bawn, serving as the local seat of justice and manor power. The Civil Survey recorded it as recently repaired in the 1650s, but no trace remains above ground now. The glennyrea river still flows downslope, carrying the shape of that lost building in its water.

On top of the SW edge of a ridge which runs N-S and slopes gently to the SW, in pasture. The Glennyrea River is located c. 60m downslope to the SW. The Civil Survey (1654-6) refers to Redhill castle as 'a castle and some thatcht houses with a Bawne about them...the sd Castle, Bawne, and lands of Rehill (being a mannor) is appendant a Court-leet and a Court-Baron' (Simington 1931, vol.1, 374) and also mentions that 'the castle of Reighhill [was] lately repayred' (ibid., 260). On the 1st (1840) ed. OS 6-inch map a roughly square dashed area is depicted at the site of Rehill Castle, this may be an indication of the bawn (TS081-045002-). There is a short length of hachuring on the 2nd (1904-05) ed. OS 6-inch map but there is no visible trace of the castle above ground. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011
