Site of Fardurraghnagransbys Castle

Castle, unclassified

What is recorded here

Fardurraghnagransbys Castle vanished before modern memory, leaving only a curving wall in a private photograph and a blank field in County Carlow. The wall looked too thin for battle, suggesting a domestic or ceremonial building mislabelled by later fear. Grangeford may have been a threshold, a household marker or a boundary claim rather than a military strongpoint. Its loss is typical: ordinary places disappeared, were renamed or stopped being believed.
The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Marked 'Site of' on 1837 'OS 6-inch' map. No visible trace. In front (E) yard of farm. Photograph in private possession shows portion of curving wall, possibly part of tower, prior to demolition. Wall appears to be insubstantial for defended structure.

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
