What is recorded here

No bones, no markers, no visible scar remain inside the ringfort, yet the buried children are still named in the place. The missing ground suggests they were hidden from sight, perhaps moved, perhaps forgotten, perhaps deliberately concealed beneath the ordinary soil of West Cork. The underground passage nearby deepens the idea that this was not a casual field but a shaped edge between living memory and excluded grief.
In ringfort (CO140-055001). No trace of burial ground in interior. Man-made underground passage (CO140-055002-) here also. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
