What is recorded here
Jeffry Mocler held Mocklerstown in 1640 with a castle and bawn, but the rise now holds only memory and a single limestone window head buried in a gate pier. The chambered stone still wears fine punch tooling on its soffit, proving that someone shaped light and shadow before the castle vanished. The wide pasture and distant church suggest a proud local domain, yet the ground has taken back most of its shape.
On the edge of a rise with land falling gradually to the N, E and S, in rolling pasture. The land to the W is level and is occupied by farm buildings. There is an extensive view in all directions. A length of bawn wall (TS069-070002-), running roughly N-S, lies c. 60m to the W. A church (TS069-070003-) was located c. 90m to the SW. In the Civil Survey (1652-54) the proprietor in 1640 is given as ‘Jeffry Mocler of Moclerstowne Esqr. Irish Papist’ and ‘The sd lands hath on it a castle & Bawne tenantable’ (Simington 1931, vol. 1, 210). The ‘Site of Castle’ is indicated on the 1st (1840) ed. 6-inch OS map. There is no visible trace of the castle above ground, however, an elliptical-headed window head of a single-light window (opening Wth 0.17m) is located in a gate pier c. 20m NW of the former location of the castle. The window head is of roughly dressed limestone (Wth 0.41m; H 0.26m; T 0.18m) with a chamfer (Wth 0.08m) around the opening, and the soffit is decorated with fine punch tooling.
