Site of Castle — Report the wrong picture

Marked faintly as a rectangular feature (dims c. 10m E-W; c. 5m N-S) on the 1839 Ed. of the OS 6-inch map where it is described in gothic lettering as the site of a castle. It is situated on a slight S-facing slope. References to Devereux of Cleristown, but not to a castle, date from 1543 (Jeffrey 1979, 70 71), and while John Devereux owned 480 acres at Cleristown in 1640 together with 580 acres at Sleedagh, Blackmoor, Norristown and Pollmanagh in Kilmannan parish, there is no mention of a castle at Cleristown in the Civil Survey (1654-6) (Simington 1953, 136-7). There are no visible remains of a structure at ground level. The church site (WX041-037---) is c. 10m to the S.
