R. C. Chapel (in ruins)

Marked as a roofed, rectangular structure (dims c. 20m E-W; c. 10m N-S) on the 1839 Ed. of the OS 6-inch map where it is described in italic lettering as ‘R.C. Chapel in ruins’. It is situated on a gentle S-facing slope on the E side of a farm lane, with Cleristown castle site (WX041-038----) c. 10m to the N. There are no visible remains of a structure, enclosure or burial at ground level. It may have been a penal or post-penal Roman Catholic church that became disused when a cruciform church was built c. 650m to the N, which is depicted as extant on the 1839 Ed. of the OS 6-inch map or, given its obscure location, it may have served the castle as a chapel.
