Castle: Ormond strongholds near Castlemarket, recorded by Carrigan in 1905 and lost about 1800. The Ouveg, bridge and old moat belong together: water, stone and memory.

On the S bank of the Ouveg River. According to Carrigan (1905, vol. 2, 113), the 'castle stood beside a high moat in a field called "the Kruckawn" or "Old Castle," close to Castlemarket bridge. It formerly belonged to the Earls of Ormond. It was destroyed, together with the adjoining moat [KK001-006002-], about 1800'. The castle is not visible at ground level. The castle at Castlemarket was likely held by local landowners in the medieval period, with references dating to at least the early 20th century. It is remembered for its historical association with the area's defensive and territorial development along the Ouveg River.

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
