Site of Castle, Castle Field — Report the wrong picture

What is recorded here

Clay castle, vanished before the surveyors arrived, its fields still named for the shape it left behind. Edmund MacGibbon the White Knight died holding it in 1608, but by 1655 it was a small stump sold from Nicholas Haly to the Reeves. The castle did not resist time; it stopped existing as a building and became a boundary, a field name, a memory in soil. Even absence can be owned, traded, and remembered.

Westropp (1906-7, 196) recorded the following details about Castle Creagh (an Chaisleáin Chria / castle of clay); ' "Castle Field" and site marked. 1581 Ger. f. Edmund held Glanehaggylshoen C[astle]. (Inq. Exch., 11). 1608 Edm. MacGibbon, the White Knight, died seised of it (Inq. Chan., 17b). 1655 Glanehagilshy, a small stump of a C[astle], N. Hall or Haly, of Tooreen, sold to J. and W. Reeves (C.S., xxv., p. 7;B.D., p. 92), 1667 Confirmed to J. Reeves (Act Sett.)'. No surface remains visible, annotated 'Site of Castle ' on 1840 ed. OSi 6-inch map with circular shaped quarry adjacent to fields annotated 'Castle Field' which are now sports fields. Castle depicted on 17th century Down Survey map of Coshlea Barony (Hib. Reg.). Tower house type castle depicted on 1654-56 Down Survey parish map of Ballylanders (NLI MS 718). The terrier of this parish recorded that Nicholas Haly of Tooreen an Irish papist was the owner of these lands upon which stood 'a Ruined Castle' (ibid.). The 1654-56 Civil Survey of Limerick recorded that on this townland there 'stands a smale stump of a Castle out of Reparation' (Simington 1938, 231). Edmund held Glennahaglish Castle in 1581, as recorded in the Inquisition Exchequer. The site is remembered as part of the historical landscape of early modern landholding in Ireland.
