Skreen, County Sligo, Ireland, is the birthplace of Sir George Stokes, 1st Baronet, born 13 August 1819. He spent fifty-four years at Cambridge, shaped fluid dynamics and optics, and presided over the Royal Society from 1885 to 1890. A small Irish town gave Victorian science one of its greatest architects.
