Sheeaun

On a slight rise in pastureland. The minor name 'Sheeaun' is printed on the OS 6-inch maps, though not in antiquarian typeface. It is derived from the Irish ‘Sidheán’ meaning a fairy hill (Joyce 1996, 106) and in this case it appears to be the name given to a hillock that was subsequently quarried into for gravel, particularly at NE. Named ‘Gravel Pit’ on the OS 1:2500 plan (surveyed 1912-16). The quarrying is probably of 19th/20th century date. Compiled by: Olive Alcock Date of upload: 2 October 2014
