Shanagh Castle (Site of) — Report the wrong picture

What is recorded here

Shanagh Castle belonged to the Nagle family before forfeiture and transfer to Hughes in 1657, yet no wall, chamber or trench remains visible to mark the exact place. The site resists identification because maps and surveys still argue about whether the castle stood in Shanagh or Clogher, leaving only a grass-covered bank and a west-facing slope in rough pasture. What is certain is that a household powerful enough to hold a castle once occupied this landscape; what is lost is the shape of the rooms, the names of the people inside them, and the moment the Nagle line ended here.

In rough pasture, on W-facing slope. No visible surface trace of castle. Linear grass-covered bank (c. 11m E-W) may be remains of enclosing element as shown on 1842, 1905 and 1936 OS 6-inch maps. Documentary sources confused as to exact location of castle: Down Survey (1655-6) barony map inverts positions of Clogher and Shanagh townlands as shown on OS 6-inch map. Down Survey (1655-6) shows castle in NE corner of Clogher townland (now Shanagh), whilst OS 6-inch maps show castle in Shanagh townland c.130m SW of Clogher Hill (14278), also in Shanagh townland. Healy (1988, 432) places castle site on top of Clogher Hill. Castle of the Nagle family, forfeited by them and granted to Hughes in 1657 (ibid.).
