Settlement deserted

Medieval Leys vanished into the low fields between Lea Castle and the old churchyard, leaving behind only straight earthworks that may have been town boundaries or later drainage cuts. It was no phantom settlement: royal officials stayed there with horses, retainers and camp followers, the O’Connors of Offaly burned it, and a vast ash tree still anchored a Whit-Monday fair long after the streets disappeared. The place did not end so much as stop being named, its life scattered into floodwater, farm lanes and a tree whose shadow outlasted the town itself.
