Settlement cluster in Ballyragget, oldtown (fassadinin By.)

Settlement cluster

What is recorded here

No visible trace remains on the modern map, but the lost cluster still has an address hidden beneath the green. Three substantial houses stood together on the east bank of the River Nore, built around the practical danger of a crossing rather than the vanity of a grand estate. They may have occupied Oldtown or the southern edge of Ballyragget, large enough to resist being forgotten even when their exact stones stopped being named.
On the Down Survey (1655-6) Fassadining barony map, there is a small cluster of three substantial houses on the E side of the River Nore and related to a crossing point over the river. The precise location is unknown but they may be located in Oldtown townland or in the southern portion of Ballyragget townland. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 8 January 2019
