School

What is recorded here

Associated with the 17th-century settlement of St Johnstown (LF009-023----). A Protestant schoolhouse and a residence for a school master, with associated lands known as the ‘School-lands’ (HMSO 1858, vol. 2, 508), were established by the English Crown c. 1624 (Cal. pat. rolls Ire., Jas I, 576). The precise location of the school or house has not been identified, though the ‘School Ho.’ marked on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map may be on or close to the site of the former.
