Saint Luke's Church (Killeevan)

Square-plan three-stage tower, dated 1790, comprising remains of former Church of Ireland church. Coursed rubble stone walls, having remains of lime render visible in places, and with dressed block-and-start sandstone quoins, dressed sandstone string course to ground stage of tower, continuing onto remains of gable wall to rear (east) of tower. Dressed sandstone plat-band to second stage of tower. Rubble infill wall to third stage, faced with dressed cut sandstone. Inscribed date plaque to front (west) elevation above entrance doorway. Painted render visible to interior (east) elevation of tower and gable wall. Round-headed openings to each elevation of third stage of tower, possible remains of enclosed bell-cote. Blocked oculus to front of second stage, having tooled sandstone surround. Round-headed door opening to front, with tooled sandstone surround and lintel. Set within graveyard having coursed rubble stone boundary walls to front, terminating in double-leaf wrought-iron gate flanked by square-plan coursed rubble stone piers, having square plinths, and tooled sandstone capping.

This Church of Ireland church was replaced by the nearby Saint Laeban's Church in 1850. Prominently sited on a height, its tower is visible for a considerable distance and provides an interesting focal point on the landscape. Its coursed rubble stone walls is articulated and enlivened by dressed stone detailing, most notably in the plaque, which provides contextual interest, and the simple doorway.
