Ruairí Ó Brádaigh was born in Longford, Ireland, on 2 October 1932, into a middle-class republican family that lived in a duplex home on Battery Road. His father, Matt Brady, was an IRA volunteer wounded during an attack with the Royal Irish Constabulary in 1919, while his mother, May Caffrey, was a Cumann na mBan volunteer and University College Dublin graduate. The boy grew up in a home where resistance was ordinary, shaping the leader he would become.
