What is recorded here

Described by Bence-Jones (1978) as an 18th-century house comprising two-storeys over a basement with a gable-ended front and a gable-ended return. The front was of five bays with a fanlighted doorway. This was the childhood home of Lady Gregory. Only the ruins of the house survive. It was burnt in 1922.

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in RoxboroughFairy fort / earthen ringfort · 544 ydComputer-made picture

Explorer Tom Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Roxborough is having a feud with the next village over something about who stole the best potatoes. The quarry to the north is definitely judging its low maintenance standards on a daily basis. Look up, the best bit is always higher than you think it will be.

Man-made underground passage in RoxboroughMan-made underground passage · 553 ydComputer-made picture

Explorer Tom Man-made underground passage in Roxborough is listening to the secrets of the earth like it's the world's worst radio station. Bring wellies and low expectations, leave delighted by how much nonsense you just heard.

Fairy fort / stone ringfort in BallymullenFairy fort / stone ringfort · 658 ydComputer-made picture

Explorer Tom Fairy fort / stone ringfort in Ballymullen incorporates natural rock outcrop into its inner wall at E. It holds a fake world record for being built with local geology instead of actual effort. Bring a jacket, it's never as warm as I promise when the wind picks up.

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in CaherlinnyFairy fort / earthen ringfort · 899 ydComputer-made picture

Explorer Tom Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Caherlinny is a low mound pretending to be something more impressive than a dog's bed. Have a look and decide if I was lying.

IndicatedDesigned landscape feature · 1050 ydComputer-made picture

Explorer Tom Designed landscape feature in Ballymullen is exactly what it sounds like: something designed, probably by an idiot with a trowel and no vision. Some local claims he invented the concept while napping. Take a mate and argue about what it was for.

Cregg Castle (in ruins)Castle, tower house · 1.3 mi

Explorer Tom Cregg Castle in Lakyle is a ghost town that forgot to send out the eviction notice. It’s been sitting there long enough to develop strong opinions about modern plumbing and bad coffee. Ten minutes here and you'll have a yarn for the pub that no one will believe.

Kirra CottageHouse · 1.4 mi

Explorer Tom Kirra Cottage in Ballycuddy is feuding with the next village over who stole their best thatching reeds. The scolloped roof looks like a wave frozen mid-crash onto the doorstep. Get there before the neighbours start yelling about property lines again.

water pump1.4 mi

Explorer Tom Water pump in Ballygarraun makes a weird clinking sound at night that nobody can explain. It thinks it’s elegant with its fluted neck, but honestly, it looks like a fancy bottle opener. Go on, count the windows and yawn.

Woodville Walled GardenGarden · 1.7 miComputer-made picture

Explorer Tom Woodville Walled Garden has caught my eye in County Galway. I bet a garden with a name like that could keep me talking all afternoon; I'm already inventing a daft little scene for it, and I'll stop before it turns into history.

Castle (in ruins)Castle, Anglo-Norman masonry castle · 4.7 mi

Explorer Tom Castle in Ardrahan North, County Galway is probably where the rabbits hold their council meetings every Tuesday night. They look very serious when they discuss the grass situation out there. Perfect spot to practise your best tour-guide voice.
