Rookwood House in Newtown has two enormous classical urns waiting inside the gates. Most houses let you get through the door before making you afraid of breaking something; this one starts while you’re still steering.

Detached five-bay two-storey country house, c.1810. Roughcast rendered walls. Timber sash windows. Double leaf timber panelled door with flanking Composite columns and elaborate radial fanlight. Approached by flight of steps. Hipped slate roof behind parapet, with two flanking chimney stacks. Inside gateway entrances two large classical urns on plinths.

A handsome, substantial Georgian house retaining much original fabric, including a particularly fine doorway, still set in its own mature grounds which contain some attractive ornamental features.
