What is recorded here
Maulagallane holds one cupmark, barely wider than a child’s palm, cut into fractured sandstone above the Small river valley. The stone stretches thirteen metres through mountain heath, overlooked by higher ground and shadowed by a young coniferous plantation. That much is known. What is missing is the hand that struck the stone, the reason for the mark, and the life that moved through this narrow valley when the cup was made. The landscape preserves the shape but withholds the story.
In mountain heath and area of rock outcrop (46m OD), on an E-facing slope, on W side of Small river valley; A coniferous plantation is c. 12m to E. Moderate views N->E->SW and overlooked by higher ground to W->NW. A very rough and fractured sandstone (dims. 13m NE-SW; 1.86m NW-SE; max. H 0.98m at N) which is subrectangular in plan. Stone rises to a distinct knob of rock (H 0.98m) covered by heather and mollinia at W and continues under peat to NW side. The decorated surface (dims. 0.10m N-S; 0.10m E-W) has an ENE-facing aspect with deep striations and fractures (long-axis ENE-WSW) and a single cupmark (diam. 9cm; D 20mm).
