Rock art in Magheranaul

Rock art

What is recorded here

Mentioned in the Grace Notes as a rock art site in Magheranaul, County Donegal, the place still holds its shape beside the road. The story says a woman walked out of the rock and became a person, but no clear witness or written record preserves that claim. The rock itself remains the visible part, while the woman belongs to the living memory of the area.
Described by Van Hoek as 'Two metres NW of the footprint (DG004-063004-) is another part of the ridge, sloping 15 degrees ENE. It has at least seven single cupmarks. Another cup on the lower part of the sheet shows traces of four (complete?) rings, heavily weathered in places. It has a possible tail from the central cup running down the slope' (Fig. 5E) (Van Hoek 1987, 30). Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload/revision: : 30 May 2010

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
