Castle

Castlestuke: In 1601, this castle is recorded as inhab-ited by Phelemy Brasleigh O'Doherty's son (CSPI 1600-1, 277). Shaw-Mason records the tradition that it was built by Phelemy Brasleigh O'Doherty to keep his children protected from the ravages of smallpox (I, 1814, 182-3). The location of this castle is probably to be identified with the remains on top of a stack, c. 4m high W of Dunmore Head (Davies and Swan 1939, 198). The top of the stack is c. 7m by 4m and has a subrectangular central depression c. 1.5m by 2.5m by .5m deep. Some courses of masonry are visible on the NW edge of the stack. Phelemy Brasleigh O'Doherty built Castle Lagacurry in the late 16th or early 17th century to house his children. It is remembered for its association with the O'Doherty family and as an example of early modern domestic architecture in the region.
