Rock art in Magheranaul

Rock art

What is recorded here

Eight deep cupmarks sit close together on a horizontal rock face in County Donegal, barely two metres from another marked stone. Someone struck that solid surface repeatedly, forcing hollows into the granite without modern tools. The depth suggests force, patience and purpose, though the human hands have long disappeared. The stones still hold the shape of that forgotten effort.
Described by Van Hoek as 'Only 2m N of DON 21 (DG004-064) are eight more cupmarks on a horizontal part of the same outcrop. They are roughly pocked out, rather deep and again close together' (Van Hoek 1988, 46). Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload/revision: : 30 May 2010
