What is recorded here
Coolboy Big is an extensive rock outcrop hidden beneath vegetation in County Donegal. A writer named Kinahan mentioned cupmarks cut into the stone in 1889, but later investigators failed to find them. The rocks may have worn smooth, become buried under soil, or simply resisted the search. Whatever disappeared, the area still holds the shape of human attention, waiting beneath its green skin.
A reference to cupmarks cut on natural rock surfaces in this area could not be corroborated. It is an area of extensive rock outcrop covered by vegetation. (Kinahan 1889, 286)
The above description was derived from the 'Archaeological Survey of County Donegal. A description of the field antiquities of the County from the Mesolithic Period to the 17th century.' Compiled by: Brian Lacey with Eamon Cody, Claire Cotter, Judy Cuppage, Noel Dunne, Vincent Hurley, Celie O'Rahilly, Paul Walsh and Seán Ó Nualláin (Lifford: Donegal County Council, 1983). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated.
