What is recorded here
Kilmacrenan Castle stood on a steep flat-topped rise above the Leannan river, though time has reduced it to grass-covered banks without coherent shape. It watched the water from a commanding height, perhaps guarding local trade or simply marking territorial pride. The lost stones may have belonged to a noble family, a regional lord, or even a temporary military post during turbulent centuries. What remains is a silhouette of power, its walls dissolved into the hillside but its purpose still visible in the land's memory.
The 'site of' a castle is marked here on the 2nd and 3rd editions of the OS 6-inch maps. The site is a large flat-topped steep-edged rise. Towards the W end of this rise are a number of grass-covered banks without any apparent coherent pattern. The site is located in a commanding position overlooking the Leannan river 180m to the S.
