What is recorded here

In a large tract of bogland. Known locally as the 'Friar's Pass', a section of it was exposed during turf-cutting operations in 1977 (Topgr. Files NMI). It comprises a poorly preserved wooden causeway (L 48m, Wth 2.1m), its long axis running WSW-ENE. According to local tradition, it connected a 'church' (GA019-082----) in Timacat to a 'monastery' (GA019-073----) in Moat, 4km to NW. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
