Road

The site (L 39.983m; Wth 2.8m; D 0.65m) is orientated NW-SE and consists of a dense deposit of brushwood, roundwoods and twigs. The roundwoods (diam. 0.06-0.11m) are concentrated towards the upper part of the site and are orientated in an approximately E-W or NE-SW direction. The underlying layer is composed of irregularly laid, mixed brushwood and twigs, up to seven pieces deep. At one sighting, a squared plank with a scorched underside is recorded. A small number of upright elements are also noted through the site. The wood is in poor condition largely as a result of milling activity. Numerous elements show evidence for woodworking. Wood species hazel, birch, willow and Pomoideae. Radiocarbon dated to cal. AD 981-1186 (UCD-0144). The site is generally located in poorly to moderately humified Sphagnum peat containing Eriophorum and ericaceous remains. SMR WM039-349----, SMR WM039-350---- and SMR WM039-351---- form a cluster adjacent to the N end of this site. The central sighting of this site is 0.18m above SMR WM039-322---- and adjacent to SMR WM039-324---- to the S. SMR WM039-255---- is located 4.2m to the NE of the S end of this site.
