Road

This togher (L 8.1m; Wth 4.2m; D 0.28m), orientated N-S, consisted of a linear spread of brushwood (av. diam. 0.02-0.03m), occasional roundwood (diam. 0.06-0.13m), twigs, woodchips and a single timber. The elements were predominantly longitudinally laid with the roundwood concentrated in its central portion. At the SW end was a deposit of very closely laid brushwood, orientated E-W, the density of which suggested that it may have been the remains of a hurdle. A scatter of bark fragments lay along the W edge of the site. Twigs were deposited in three separate beds (dims. from 0.2 x 0.2m to 0.3 x 0.6m). The condition of the wood was generally good, with some elements retaining well-preserved bark. Woodworking was evidenced by metal-cut toolmarks and a single irregularly split timber. Wood species identified included birch, apple-type, willow, hazel, alder and ash. A fragment of a hazel withy was recovered. This togher lay approximately 0.5m above a platform (LF004-032----). Radiocarbon dating revealed a date range of 390-200 cal BC (Wk-20953) (Moore and O’Connor 2009a, 32, EDC 28). Compiled by: Mary Tunney based on data kindly supplied by Caitríona Moore.
