Road

A togher (L 159m) orientated ENE-WSW. Excavation revealed an upper walking surface (Wth 0.4-0.7m), which consisted of a core of closely spaced roundwood and brushwood longitudinals, with longitudinal outliers placed parallel to these central elements (Dunne 2002k, 206). This superstructure rested on transverse, diagonal and longitudinal roundwood and brushwood. The largest transverse was a curving oak roundwood (L 3.5m). The wood was very soft and decayed and no well-preserved worked ends were recovered. A small number of timbers possessed worked ends that were in a degraded and decayed condition. The largest of the upper longitudinals was a half-split, roundwood trunk that was hollowed through decay and which may have been in that rotted condition when it was originally put in place.
