What is recorded here

Adjacent to a stream which exits from St Maine's holy well (SL040-170001-) and flows to O'Rourke's Ford (SL040-170002-). In 1836 it was recorded that 'the print of the saint's [St Maine] knees while praying are to be seen on a large stone at the stream' (OSNB vol. 1, 70). There are no visible remains of this stone. Linked to St Maine, a 6th-century Irish saint associated with healing and pilgrimage sites in the west of Ireland. The stone is traditionally believed to bear the impressions of the saint’s knees from where he knelt in prayer, a common motif in early Christian holy sites.

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
