Ring-ditch in Irishtown (castleknock By.)

Located in a large arable field, on an alluvial terrace, c. 190m S of the W-E running Ward River. This field is on lands formerly associated with Irishtown House (demolished), which lay c. 440m to the SW. Now within open field W of M2. Another ring-ditch (DU010-004----) is located c. 267m to the WSW. There has been widespread levelling of field boundaries as shown on the Ordnance Survey maps. An aerial photograph taken in the early 1990s (Dr. Gillian Barret AP 17) shows a circular cropmark (ext. diam. c. 18m). Not visible at ground level. The site appears clearly on Google Earth Coverage of 24 June 2018. The ring-ditch appears as a circular feature evidenced by a positive cropmark (ext. diam. c. 12.6m) defined by a ditch (Wth c. 2m). There is no evidence for an entrance gap through the ditch. Fragments of linear features are visible in general vicinity. Updated by: Tom Condit Date of upload: 22 April 2021
