Ring-ditch in Ardnamweely

A penannular ring-ditch (int. diam. 6.5m), with the entrance at SE was excavated in 2001 prior to the construction of a housing estate (Dunne 2003b, 160-1, listed as Ballydribbeen). The fosse (Wth 0.4-0.6m; D 0.01-0.16m) increased in width to 0.85m on each side of the entrance (Wth 3.06m). At the S end of the ring-ditch, close to the entrance, a shallow pit containing the cremated remains of an adult male was found. Small quantities of cremated bone were also found at the N end of the ring-ditch. Two small bone objects in the cremation may be the remains of bone pins. Finds included a single sherd of decorated Bronze Age pottery from the interior and a whetstone from the fosse.
