Richard Mulcahy, born in County Waterford in 1886, rose from the Easter Rising to command the National Army before becoming a senior Fine Gael politician. He served as Leader of the Opposition, Minister for Education, and represented several constituencies until his death in Dublin in 1971. His life bridged the violent birth of the Irish state and its later parliamentary governance.
