Richard Dixon Oldham was born in County Dublin on 31 July 1858, the son of Thomas Oldham, a Fellow of the Royal Society and geologist. He later became a British geologist who made the first clear identification of separate seismic wave arrivals and provided the first clear evidence that the Earth has a central core.
