Richard Boyle, 1st Earl of Burlington, entered the world at The College in Youghal on 20 October 1612 as the second son of Richard Boyle, 1st Earl of Cork. He lived eighty-five years, fought for King Charles I, survived the Civil War, and returned to shape Irish and English power after the Restoration. The house that gave him birth stands behind a life of wars, losses, and recovered rank.
