What is recorded here
In 2001 excavations at the Daisy Market off Arran Street East revealed a substantial wall of possible medieval date c.11m in length running north/south. It overlay natural gravels in some areas and was incorporated in the basement walls. Elsewhere it was cut by the later red brick walls. This is the only physical evidence of St Mary's abbey precinct wall that is known to survive. The wall appears to have been incorporated into the west side of Arran Street Emmet Stafford, ‘Daisy Market, Arran Street East, Dublin’ in Isabel Bennett (ed) Excavations 2001: Summary accounts of archaeological excavations in Ireland (Bray: Wordwell, 2003, 95) (01E0711).
A programme of archaeological testing carried out by IAC under licence 25E0506 has illustrated that the recorded monument DU018-343 - Religious house - Cistercian monks : Dublin North City, which relates to a wall identified in the Daisy Market on Arran St East in testing in 2001, is, in fact an 18th century cellar wall. The testing report, issued on 9/09/2025, illustrates through written, drawn and photographic record, the nature and dating of this wall (it was uncovered for almost its full length in Trench 19) and, based on this evidence makes the statement that this is not the precinct wall.
