Gateway, c.1875, comprising pair of decorative cast-iron open work piers with cornice capping having segmental coping over (incorporating acanthus detailing) with decorative finials, decorative cast-iron double gates, and sections of decorative cast-iron flanking railings having decorative cast-iron open work intermediary piers with cornice capping, and sections of decorative cast-iron curved (shallow S-plan) flanking railings extending to decorative cast-iron open work terminating piers with cornice capping. Road fronted at entrance to grounds of Woodhouse.
A very fine gateway incorporating early-surviving cast-iron work, which forms an appealing landmark on the side of the road at the entrance to the Woodhouse estate. Various details, including acanthus motifs and decorative finials, significantly enhance the artistic design quality of the gateway.
