Mountgarrett Castle is the largest surviving tower house in Wexford, a five-storey stone anchor built from 1408 and reshaped by Sir Richard Butler in 1550. Its chambers once held guardrooms, fireplaces, garderobe chutes and musket loops, while a broad bawn enclosed the residence. Frost and time have since taken the south, west and northeast walls, leaving a fragile ridge-top skeleton where a defensive household once stood.
