Vinegar Hill in County Wexford is where sixteen thousand United Irishmen, many holding pikes instead of muskets, faced Gerard Lake's thirteen thousand government troops on 21 June 1798. Needham's slower column left a western gap, and through it the bulk of the rebels escaped, turning a planned slaughter into a bitter, incomplete victory.
