Kilkenny Castle in County Westmeath was a four-storey Dillon tower house, granted to Sir Henry Dillon by Edward II in 1307 after Hugh de Lacie forfeited the manor. Its surviving western angle still rises eight metres, marked by corbels, cut stone quoins and beam holes that suggest wooden floors, wall-walks and rooms where people lived, argued, waited and watched the countryside. The castle may have stood largely intact until the nineteenth century, when collapse or dismantling reduced it to the broken angle now hidden in grass. It remains a place where loss is visible, not invented, and where the Dillon name still belongs to the land.
