Water mill

Water mill, unclassified

What is recorded here

There was a mill attached to the medieval Royal manor of Saggart (Teach Sagard) (Bradley & King 1987, 294). In 1337 the Crown granted 'to the king's yeoman, Henry de Stone, of a carucate of land in Balymargy and the mills of Tassagrade [Saggart] and Milton [Milltown] for ten years, at the yearly rent at the Exchequer of Dublin' (Cal. Fine Rolls Edward III 1337-47, 36). This is probably the mill near the castle mentioned by Austin Cooper in 1780 (Price 1942, 52). The exact location of this watermill within the townland has not been located. Compiled by: Geraldine Stout Revised by: Caimin O'Brien Date of revised upload: 24 March 2023
