What is recorded here
There is a record of a memorial slab to an unknown person with the date 1623 which mentions his wife, Elizabeth Fitzgerald (Weld 1832, 359) in the cathedral (RO016-127001-). The stone survives (Wth 0.9m; H 2.1m; T 0.1m) against the inner face of the N wall but its inscription is illegible apart from the dates in roman numerals. Weld recorded the inscription as:
MS / Exuviae / Audoenni ovd….armiger / Quas in Elphinesai…. recondi…./ Supremis….ulis…./ manebit / Cartissimam fidem in Catholico / Fidelium resurgentium coeternum induendi / Natus est anno aerae Christian… / MDCXXIII (1623)
Denatus XVIII Januarii anno / MDCLXIIII (1664) / Uxore Elizabetha Fitzgealdr / Cum sexi Iberis superslite / Quae doloris suae atque amoris / partier summi / Hoc monumentum / Viro maerens posuit /Tandem deposuit quiequid erat / Mortale Elizabetha supra scritn…..
The rest was illegible.
