Enclosure in Urney

Enclosure

What is recorded here

Urney holds a church and graveyard marked only by official numbers, yet aerial photographs reveal a faint enclosure around them. The boundary disappeared from the living land but remained visible above it, suggesting the place was shaped, valued and remembered before it was lost.
No surface remains visible of any enclosure around the church (OF026-028001-) and graveyard (OF026-028002-). Possible outline of a levelled enclosure around the church and graveyard shows up on aerial photographs (CUCAP BDU 8-12). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 23 May 2011

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
