Ogham stone in Unknown

This ogham stone found 'in the wood called Askive Woods ... opposite Parknasilla' (Macalister 1947, 199) or, according to Rhys, on 'Derrgariff mountain-side, between Kenmare and Parknasilla' (Macalister 1897, 112) in the barony of Dunkerron North. The stone was brought to Parknasilla house and is now in the National Museum of Ireland, Dublin (see DU018-357----). The inscription is 'poorly preserved', boustrophedon/up-top-down. According to O'Sullivan and Sheehan (1996, 242, no. 914) 'A diagonal cross enclosed in a rough rectangular frame occurs on the face of the stone between the two inscribed angles'. Macalister (1945, 200) read the following inspcription: S[M] . . . . BNAG MA[Q?]QI ERCIA. Moore (unpub. MA thesis) notes that 'the scores on the dexter angle stop short of the square' so that the cross is either contemporary with or earlier than the inscription. He also 'dismisses Macalister's possible M and the E of the final word'. (O'Sullivan et al 1996, 242). This stone has been studied as part of the ‘Ogham in 3D’ project undertaken by the School of Celtic Studies, Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies.
