Boazio’s 1599 map for Essex marks an unnamed castle in west Sligo, but no surviving detail says whether it stood on a hill, by a road or inside a town. The castle may have been a small fortress, a lord’s house or even a mapping mistake. What remains certain is that Sligo carried a castle strong enough to be recorded, yet elusive enough to resist identification.
