What is recorded here

No visible surface trace remains of the earthwork in Townrath, yet local memory and old maps mark the site as a rath north of the town walls. The soil may have swallowed the ridge, but the name still points to a shaped place where people lived, defended or gathered before the land was taken for other uses.

The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Site presumably that referred to as 'Townrath' on 1835 ed. of OS 6-inch map. A rath is described as having existed N of town walls (D'Alton 1844, 101). No visible surface trace.
