Drogheda fell on 11 September 1649 after Oliver Cromwell stormed the town when Sir Arthur Aston rejected surrender. The violence killed most of the 2,550-strong garrison and hundreds of civilians, turning a military port into a massacre that still poisons Cromwell's name. Aston's choice to fight rather than yield may have doomed thousands, including innocents caught inside the walls.
